Building a retaining wall from pressure-treated timbers for an economical, warm-toned solution on moderate slopes.
Timber walls offer a budget-friendly, natural-looking way to retain soil on lower slopes and garden terraces. We use ground-rated pressure-treated wood, deadman anchors, and gravel backfill so the wall resists rot and the constant moisture of our climate. While not as long-lived as stone or block, a properly built timber wall serves well for many years when drainage is handled correctly. It is a popular choice for planting beds, garden steps, and short landscape walls. We build to code and advise honestly on where timber is and is not the right fit.
Economical option for shorter walls and terraces; Warm, natural appearance for garden settings; Faster to build than masonry systems; Deadman anchors add stability on slopes; Easy to integrate with steps and planters
1) Lay out the wall and excavate a gravel base trench; 2) Set and level the first timber course on compacted gravel; 3) Stack courses, staggering joints and adding deadman anchors; 4) Backfill with drainage gravel and finish the grade behind
Wall length and height; Grade and treatment level of the timber; Number of deadman anchors and fasteners; Drainage gravel and base preparation; Site access and excavation difficulty
Timber walls are best installed in drier weather so the base and backfill compact well, typically late spring through early fall.
